PPA Challenger Series to test narrowed singles courts at upcoming events
The PPA Challenger Series on Wednesday announced that it will be introducing a narrower court for pro singles play on a trial basis at four of its upcoming events.
The new court dimensions will reduce the court width from 20 feet to 17 feet, bringing in the sidelines 1.5 feet on each side.
According to the announcement, the new dimensions “will allow for longer points, fiercer battles, and a more exciting player and spectator experience.”
PPA Challenger Series Vice President Tanner Groff gave more insight into the reasons behind the idea.
“With a focus on honing and elevating the game of pickleball at all levels, the PPA Challenger Series is the perfect stage to test new ideas,” he said in a statement. “Game innovation is crucial for all sports to continue to hone rules and regulations. Just as the Next Gen ATP Finals and Minor League Baseball are laboratories for game modifications in tennis and baseball, the PPA Challenger Series is that laboratory for pickleball. We are excited to run this trial of these new court dimensions in four of the PPA Challenger Series’ most anticipated stops on the 2026 calendar and source feedback from our pro players and fans.”
While the rule will not be in effect at this weekend’s Tucson Challenger, it will be implemented at the next four tournaments in Houston, TX; Harbour Island, FL; Newport Beach, CA; and Opelika, AL.
