PPA Vietnam Day 1 Recap: Nam Ly stuns Alshon in singles on controversial call as Waters triumphs in international debut

Main draw action at PPA Tour Asia’s MB Hanoi Cup kicked off Wednesday evening at My Dinh Indoor Athletics Arena in the Vietnam capital.

The day’s biggest result was Hoang Nam Ly’s 12-10, 0-11, 12-10 upset victory over No. 2 seed Christian Alshon in men’s singles.

The contest wasn’t without its share of controversy, though, as Nam Ly has come under fire for a tight call on match point.

Because the match was played on Grandstand Court, video replay was not available.

The singles draws also saw Pei-chuan Kao defeat No. 5 seed Judit Castillo 11-7, 11-6 and Mitchell Hargreaves come away with an 11-9, 11-2 victory over No. 5 seed Jay Devilliers.

Elsewhere, Anna Leigh Waters started her first international tournament with straight-game victories in women’s doubles and mixed doubles with Anna Bright and Ben Johns, respectively.

The 19-year-old spoke about her experience in Vietnam so far.

“It’s just been awesome to play in front of everyone” she said. “I’ve definitely felt the love so far being here in Asia, and the tournament’s just getting started so I’m excited for the st of the week.

Action will continue Thursday night with quarterfinal coverage beginning at 9pm ET on Pickleballtv.
