Schneemann, Sock stun Johnson siblings to make mixed doubles quarterfinals
Lacy Schneemann/Jack Sock pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the week so far in Mesa with an 11-6, 11-6 victory over No. 2 seeds and defending Mesa Cup champions Jorja Johnson/JW Johnson.
The No. 24 seeds had not played a tournament together before this week, but they showed impressive chemistry on Thursday with Schneemann expertly finding ways to attack JW up the line and Sock dictating form the left side.
“I felt good in the warmup, felt good dinking and rolling and attacking J-Dub, and Jack’s hands were pretty unreal today,” Schneemann said of the performance. “I think as long as we get to the kitchen, we’re a pretty dangerous team.”
“[Lacy] can dink and do the ‘Pickleball 101’ stuff. We both can, to a degree, but I think we’re also both very dangerous when we’re playing on our terms and playing aggressive,” Sock continued. “Patient aggressiveness is kind of our style.”
Schneemann/Sock will look to continue their run on Friday when they face No. 9 seeds Tina Pisnik/Noe Khlif in the quarterfinals.
