Staksrud eases past H. Johnson in two games
SALT LAKE CITY - Federico Staksrud made his 14th singles final of the year with an 11-1, 11-6 victory over No. 27 seed Hunter Johnson.
Johnson, to his credit, had a great day in Salt Lake City, picking up wins against Dylan Frazier, Eric Roddy, and Chris Haworth.
He jumped out to a 5-1 lead in Game 2 thanks to a collection of return errors from Staksrud, but the top seed proved to be too much from there, effectively attacking off the forehand wing to put his opponent under near constant pressure.
Players have had to adjust to the indoor conditions at Salt Palace Convention Center, which differ considerably from those at last week’s outdoor venue in Bristol, TN.
The courts at Bristol Sportsplex played incredibly quickly, while this week’s courts reportedly play a little softer.
Those changes didn’t seem to impact the Argentinian too much, as he made the final without dropping a game in four matches.
“It was a tough day today with the change in conditions, but I’m grateful to be in another final and am pretty happy with my performance today,” Staksrud said.
On Sunday, he will face the winner of the second semifinal between No. 2 seed Connor Garnett and No. 14 seed Rafa Hewett.
