Staksrud, Patriquin outduel Johnson, Klinger for first title of 2025

Coming into this week, Federico Staksrud and Hayden Patriquin had made it to four finals together in 2025.

They had come away with silver every time.

That changed on Sunday in North Texas, where they defeated No. 4 seeds JW Johnson/CJ Klinger 8-11, 11-7, 11-4, 11-8 to snag their first gold medal of the 2025 season.

It was quite the run for the No. 3 seeds, who ended Ben Johns/Gabe Tardio’s quest for a seventh consecutive title in the semifinals on Saturday.

A recent development for this partnership was Patriquin’s move to the left side; Staksrud had played the left with Patriquin for the last year and a half, but he shifted over to the right side a few weeks ago in Las Vegas.

The Argentine, who beat Chris Haworth earlier in the day in the men’s singles final, spoke about the experience moving to the right for the betterment of the partnership.

“I’m super happy. I don’t care how we win. I just want to win, and if that’s me hitting one ball a match, so be it. I don’t care, honestly. I’m just so proud of this kid and how good he’s gotten,” Staksrud told Pickleballtv’s Kamryn Blackwood and Matt Manasse. “He’s going to be the best player in the world, and I’m so proud of him.”

This win gives Patriquin his second consecutive world title after he and Riley Newman triumphed together at this event in 2024.

The 20-year-old spoke about how much it means to win again next to one of his closest friends in Staksrud.

“I feel like our bond is so tight. There is a little age difference, but with pickleball that doesn’t really matter,” he mentioned. “When we’re back in Florida, we golf, we hang out, and I think that’s really important on the court. I think that really shows that we have probably the best chemistry out there.”

In the bronze medal match, No. 2 seeds Christian Alshon/Andrei Daescu defeated top seeds ben Johns/Gabe Tardio by an 11-1, 13-11 score line.
