Todd overcomes slow start, battles past Buckner to make women’s singles final
Parris Todd is into the women’s singles final after a riveting 3-11, 11-6, 11-8 victory over No. 3 seed Brooke Buckner.
Buckner came out the stronger of the two competitors, overpowering Todd to the tune of an 11-3 win in the opening game.
But Todd came roaring back to the take the second game and overcame a late deficit in the decider to eventually triumph and advance to her fourth singles final of 2025.
The No. 2 seed spoke about what it took to stay in it after a tough opening game.
“[Brooke] came out, and she was swinging. She was hitting very ball I felt like an inch from the baseline, and, honestly, there was nothing I could do. She was playing incredible,” she recalled. “I feel like in Game 2, I tried to change the pace a little bit on the ball and kind of gave her some different looks. I feel like especially with a player like Brooke, if everything’s in her strike zone, she’s just blowing people off the court, so I really just had to play within myself and neutralize her a little bit.’
Top-seeded Kaitlyn Christian, who beat Judit Castillo 11-4, 11-9 earlier Saturday morning, awaits Todd in the final.
Todd won the most recent encounter between the two in the semifinals of the Black Desert Resort Red Rock Open by an 11-1, 11-4 score line, so Christian will be looking to turn the tables on Championship Sunday in east Tennessee.
