UPA Terminates Quang Duong’s Contract Following Unexcused Absence from MLP Event

The Untied Pickleball Association (UPA) has officially terminated its contract with touring pro Quang Duong, citing multiple breaches of contract — including his unexpected absence from the Major League Pickleball (MLP) Midseason Tournament in Grand Rapids, Michigan, this week.

According to a formal termination letter sent to Duong on July 12, the 20-year-old standout missed the mandatory July 9–13 event without prior approval, instead participating in a commercial pickleball camp and exhibition overseas. Duong was seen hosting a “Meet Up & Challenge” event at the Vinpearl Resort Nha Trang in Vietnam on July 11–12, as well as engaging in other promotional activities — all while MLP play was underway.

The PPA states that Duong did not inform league officials or request permission to miss the domestic event. “Your actions represent willful and material breaches of the Agreement,” the letter reads, citing the violation of exclusivity clauses and event approval procedures outlined in his contract.

This marks the second such incident in recent months. Duong previously received a formal warning from the PPA in May after competing in an unapproved international tournament where prize money was awarded. That incident led to sanctions and a clear message from the UPA that further violations on Duong’s part could lead to contractual termination.

“While unfortunate, your repeated disregard for your contractual and professional obligations leaves the PPA no choice,” the letter concludes.

The UPA, which has worked to elevate the sport of pickleball with a professionalized structure and player platform, emphasized the importance of clear protocols, fair enforcement, and maintaining the integrity of its competitive calendar. The association also made clear that it reserves the right to pursue legal action for further violations, including participation in non-PPA events during what would have been the remainder of Duong’s contract.

Duong has not yet made a public statement in response to the decision. To keep up with any continued developments in this story, follow us at @pickleballdotcom.
