Vietnam Day 1 Recap: Yu takes down Oncins in singles, Wang and McGuffin survive in mixed doubles
PPA Tour Asia’s MB Vietnam Cup began Tuesday evening with early round action in all five pro events.
The day’s biggest result came from the men’s singles draw, where qualifier Thomas Yu defeated top seed Eric Oncins by an 11-9, 3-11, 11-9 score line.

Yu will take on Kenta Miyoshi in the quarterfinals.
The mixed doubles draw also brought the drama, with Chao Yi (Zoey) Wang/Tyson McGuffin narrowly defeating Ting Chieh (Jamie) Wei/Len Yang 12-10, 6-11, 13-11 in the final match of the day.
The top seeds actually faced match point at 10-11 in the third game, but they were able to close out the contest few moments later after nearly an hour and a half on court.
“I thought we fought well,” McGuffin said of the performance. "I don’t think our overall level was super high, but sometimes you’ve just got to win matches by finding that next gear, digging your teeth in, and that’s what we did."
Elsewhere, Ben Johns/Dekel Bar defeated Hien Truong/Quan Do 11-1, 11-8 to kick off their men’s doubles campaign.
This is the first tournament that the two have played together since 2021, but it didn’t take them long to find their groove.
“I’ve been excited for this tournament and partnering up with Ben again,” Bar said after the win. “It’s been a few years, so this is a lot of fun for me.”
Live quarterfinal coverage from Da Nang will be available starting at 9pm ET Wednesday evening on Pickleballtv.
