Waters, Bright avenge Cincinnati defeat, sweep Kawamotos for women’s doubles gold

Anna Leigh Waters/Anna Bright claimed both a title and some revenge in the third match of the day on Humana Championship Court at Beerman Family Tennis Center.

They fell to the familial pairing of Jackie Kawamoto/Jade Kawamoto when they last met in the semifinals of the Cincinnati Showcase back in September, but they flipped the script on Sunday to the tune of an 11-8, 11-4, 11-3 victory.

Waters gave some insight into how the earlier loss to the No. 5 seeds has benefitted her and Bright’s partnership.

“One reason I feel like Anna and I have gotten better is because we lost that match to the Kawamotos,” she revealed. “When you lose, it really just pushes you to train harder, and when you finally have a chance to then really show what you’ve been working on and win that next match, it’s just an amazing feeling.”

The contest also saw Bright move over to the left side at times when points were hard to come by for the top seeds.

“I think it just changed up the pattern a lot,” she said of the adjustment. “I think they were kind of in a rhythm and countering and moving the ball around really well, so we just wanted give them another look.”

Waters and Bright will look to ascend to new heights when they next play together during the 2026 season.
