Waters downs Parenteau, secures Triple Crown
SAN CLEMENTE, CA - Anna Leigh Waters closed out Championship Sunday at the Select Medical Orange County Cup with an 11-6, 11-6 victory over Catherine Parenteau in the women’s singles final.
The win was the finishing touch on the 17-year-old’s Triple Crown after she picked up gold medals in mixed doubles and women’s doubles earlier in the day.
This is Triple Crown No. 27 for Waters, but she says that the growing parity in the sport makes each one more difficult to come by.
“Pickleball is getting to the point where your opponent has a chance to beat you every time you step on the court,” she shared. “I have to fight my hardest for every single point, from the first round to the final."
In the bronze medal match, No. 8 seed Judit Castillo defeated No. 6 seed Brooke Buckner 11-4, 11-4.
All pro players will now have a month-long break from PPA tournaments, as attention turns to the Major League Pickleball Mid-Season Tournament set to take place July 10-14 in Grand Rapids, MI during the Beer City Open.
