Waters outduels Fahey in highly competitive affair

Coming into Sunday, it had been 472 days since Anna Leigh Waters had lost a singles match on the PPA Tour.

That number still stands after the women’s singles final in Cincinnati, but she sure was pushed in her 11-7, 13-11 victory over No. 2 seed Kate Fahey.

After Waters took the first game, Fahey struck quickly in Game 2 and jumped out to a 6-1 lead as she looked to force a decider.

Waters did will herself back into that second game, but the red-hot Fahey found herself with game points at three different moments.

Those chances would go unconverted, however, as Waters held her nerve and went on to close out the contest at the second time of asking.

The 18-year-old spoke about how rewarding a victory like Sunday’s is because of how high the level was from both players throughout the match.

“I think we both are very hard on ourselves, which is why I think we’re at the top right now. Having your opponent push you to the limit when you win, it just feels different. I don’t want to say it feels better because it does feel good to beat somebody easily, but when you’ve battled and left it all out there and then come out with a win, it feels really good.”

Fahey admits that Waters was too much in the end but assures fans that she will be back for more battles.

“I had some of my best stuff in the second, and she had an answer for it as always, but I’m gonna keep fighting and keep trying to have performances like this,” she said.

In the bronze medal match, No. 7 seed Catherine Parenteau defeated No. 6 seed Lea Jansen by an 11-9, 11-2 score line.
