Waters surges into women’s singles final over Fahey
Anna Leigh Waters is into the women’s singles gold medal match at the Veolia Cape Coral Open presented by Proton after an 11-7, 11-8 victory over No. 4 seed Kate Fahey.
Even before playing the top seed, Thursday had been quite a battle for Fahey. All three of her previous matches (against Callie Smith, Hannah Blatt, and Salome Devidze) went to three games, and she had amassed nearly two-and-a-half hours of court time before taking the court for her semifinal.
She notably began dropping more from the baseline instead of driving her passing shots—which did lead to some success—but Waters pulled away late in both games when things got tight to maintain her undefeated singles record in 2025.
“I felt like in both games I had a pretty big lead, and then Kate came up with some amazing shots and put some pressure on me,” Waters said of the performance. “I definitely wasn’t happy about that and wish I could have closed out those games a little quicker, but I feel like I play my best when things get tight.”
The top seed will face either Lea Jansen or Chao Yi (Zoey) Wang on Championship Sunday.
