Why is pickleball so popular on U.S. college campuses?
There's no denying the popularity of pickleball on American college campuses.
Students across the country are hitting the court in record numbers.
Why is that the case? What inspires young people to pick up a paddle?
Inside High Ed reporter, Ashley Mowreader, recently published a story on the subject.
She referenced a research study being conducted by SUNY Brockport associate professor, Mark Chang, in which students at the school identified several factors encouraging them to play.

"They want to master some kind of skill, they want to win some kind of game, and they want to be connected and engage socially," explained Chang.
Chang also reported that students with experience in tennis, racquetball, and other racket sports gravitate to pickleball because it closely resembles an activity they are already familiar with.
Maintaining health and fitness, learning something new, and having fun with friends were also common responses, as was the influence of social media since so many players share pickleball photos and videos online and essentially connect in that way.
Mowreader also acknowledges that pickleball is increasingly popular, in general, "because it’s relatively easy to engage in, featuring a smaller court than tennis, low-budget equipment, and simple rules."
Colleges have recognized student interest in pickleball and responded accordingly with new courts and facilities.
Mowreader writes that The University of the Pacific was the first school to open a pickleball and padel complex in 2024.
And over the last 12 months, Arkansas Tech University, Eastern Mennonite University, Eastern Illinois University, Columbus State University, Wright State University, Penn State University, Duke University, Troy University, the University of Alabama, Tulane University and Baylor University "have all announced plans to open, create or renovate spaces" to meet that growing demand.
"These courts appeal to a broad demographic, even some of our students who may not be as familiar with fitness and recreation," said University of Alabama VP of Student Life, Steven Hood. "It’s a great opportunity to connect and engage students promoting physical activity."
Mowreader notes that "pickleball offers several opportunities for student well-being on campus" and "pickleball club membership unites students of similar interests, providing a space for physical activity and community belonging and connection," with over 200 collegiate pickleball clubs currently operating nationwide.
Believe it or not, there's a monetary component encouraging participation too.
"After winning the collegiate pickleball championship, the University of Virginia’s pickleball club evolved into a five-person student-run business to manage name, image and likeness deals," writes Mowreader. "Students at Utah Tech University can also receive scholarships for competing in pickleball tournaments or holding a leadership position in the club."
"Columbus State University leaders hope involvement in pickleball translates to student participation in intramural sports leagues or tournaments," adds Mowreader. "Campus pickleball tournaments also promote community engagement. The University of Southern Indiana’s Alumni Pickleball Tournament introduced students to mentors, encouraging engagement on campus."
