Why was Scott Peterson attacked during a prison pickleball match? Apparently, 'God made this happen'

The man who attacked Scott Peterson during a pickleball match at Mule Creek State Prison near Sacramento earlier this month has been identified as 39-year-old Charles Miles.

According to a Mar. 14 story by San Francisco Chronicle crime reporter Megan Cassidy, Miles "didn't recognize the infamous convicted killer before he began punching him in the face" and "he attacked after mistakenly believing that Peterson was charging at him with a weapon in his hand."

That supposed "weapon" was a paddle, of course, and Peterson was simply chasing down a pickleball when he came within close proximity of Miles on a recreation path.

"God made this happen," said Miles, during a recent phone interview with Cassidy. "It was God's plan for sure."

How so?

"Miles said the incident with Peterson occurred in the exact same location on the track that he had stopped to pray to God a day earlier," wrote Cassidy.

Talk about an interesting twist.

"Miles said he didn't see the pickleball go by him before the man he now knows was Peterson approached, and that he told Peterson to give him some personal space," added Cassidy.

As Peterson pursued the pickleball, another inmate supposedly yelled: “Hey, that’s the baby killer!” And things just went downhill from there.

"It just triggered a primal urge in me," explained Miles. "That's when I just took fight on him, and I just beat the living f--- out of him."

Both Peterson and Miles sustained minor injuries from the encounter.

"In his prayers the day before the attack, Miles said he had asked God to "let your will be done," and to "use me as a vessel of your will." Miles said he believes the location of his confrontation with Peterson was a signal from God," detailed Cassidy.

Peterson is serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole for murdering his wife, Laci, and unborn son, Conner.

Miles is also serving time for murder, but he's eligible for parole in December 2031.
