Genie Bouchard retires from professional tennis at National Bank Open

UPA Tour Pro Genie Bouchard retired from professional tennis on Wednesday following a three-set match at the National Bank Open in her hometown of Montreal.

Bouchard was defeated 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 by No. 17 seed Belinda Bencic in a second-round battle on Center Court at IGA Stadium.

“It’s so special to play my last match here in Montreal. I remember being a kid, sitting in these stands, dreaming I would play on these courts one day,” she said during a tearful goodbye speech. “It feels like such a full-circle moment to finish my career here.”

Bouchard earned her first WTA Tour victory since 2023 earlier this week by defeating Emiliana Arango 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 to the delight of the crowd.

The 31-year-old Canadian announced earlier this month that this would be her final tennis tournament.

“I would like to thank the fans. Your passion is incredible,” added Bouchard. “The way you support players from here, that’s something I will never forget.”

Bouchard was the first Canadian-born player representing Canada to reach the final of a major singles tournament when she went head-to-head with Petra Kvitová at Wimbledon in 2014.

She also participated in the Australian Open and French Open semifinals that same year and reached a career-high ranking of World No. 5 in the process.

With her tennis career officially in the rearview mirror, Bouchard will now turn her attention to pickleball on a full-time basis.

She turned pro in 2024 and has been competing in PPA Tour and MLP events.
