McGuffin, Fong bond during tattoo sessions in Los Angeles: 'We are full-blown homies now'
Tyson McGuffin isn’t easily fazed on the court.
And apparently the same can be said for his demeanor during extended stays on the tattoo chair, too.
The 35-year-old's back was recently inked by renowned artist Lawry Fong for 18 hours over two consecutive days at Mad Rabbit Studios in Los Angeles, and the pickleball superstar handled everything like a champ.
Fong, who specializes in black and gray realism, was charged with tattooing two distinct pieces: the crucifixion of Jesus and a portrait of McGuffin’s wife, Meg.

“Tyson was really working with me because two straight days of getting tattooed is pretty rough. He sat through it pretty good. He was trying to push through it on his end,” said Fong, who owns and operates Grailed Gallery, a private tattoo studio in the City of Angels. “He was really cool. He had his ideas, but he was also super open to giving me a little creative freedom to do my thing. I really appreciated that.”
McGuffin’s love of tattoos is well documented, of course, and he sports every single one of them with tremendous pride.
The latest additions are simply sensational.
“My whole back is a hero inspirational piece about people I’ve looked up to or inspired me along my journey,” explained McGuffin. “I see tattoos as showcasing art on my body that’s all part of my life’s journey and what’s important to me. I enjoy the mental journey and challenge behind it as well. Sink or swim. Kill or be killed. I’ve been an extremist my whole life and an addict with anything I’m doing. My main addictions currently in life are family, pickleball and ink.”
It’s no wonder that McGuffin and Fong connected during the sessions.
There was major mutual respect there.
“Tyson’s a famous athlete, but he’s super down to earth. It was like talking to one of my friends. We were just chopping it up the whole time. He’s all about family, too, which I really admire about him. We had a good time,” praised Fong. “I’ve also been wanting to play pickleball, so I thought it was pretty cool how we got linked up. That’s when I researched more about it. It’s crazy because I used to play tennis, and he was telling me that he used to play tennis as well.”
“After meeting him and spending two full days together, we are full-blown homies now,” shared McGuffin. “It’s nice to find a down-to-earth tattoo artist that’s like-minded, has a soft hand and is extremely talented.”
McGuffin and Fong are scheduled to meet again in June to officially complete the back piece.
A portrait of NBA legend Michael Jordan will be added to the already impressive mix of meaningful figures on display.
As expected, though, McGuffin likely won't stop there.
"I plan to get my legs done at the end of the year and be fully blasted," he concluded. "I've known since I was a kid that I wanted to be fully blasted with ink."
Stay tuned to Mad Rabbit Studios on social media for an upcoming episode of Spilling Ink showcasing the creation of McGuffin's new tattoos with Fong.
Formulated with clean and vegan ingredients, Mad Rabbit products are designed specifically for aftercare and tattoo skincare to help improve the healing process and preserve tattoos.
