Online community keeps Bellamy 'immersed in pickleball'
It’s no secret that pro pickleball athletes spend a lot of time on the court.
While some players like to take a break every now and then, that isn't the case for Roscoe Bellamy, who enjoys talking pickleball as much as actually playing it.
Earlier this year, Bellamy started co-hosting the Pickleballers podcast with Jared Paul, and the gig has proven to be a fruitful one.
“Hosting the podcast has been amazing. It’s been really interesting to talk to a lot of the players, and I get a lot of insight about the game,” shared Bellamy. “Even though I’m friends with a lot of these people who come on the podcast, I love getting to ask them whatever questions I want because it gives me a chance to go beneath the surface just a little bit.”
Pickleballers has featured some of the game's most notable players and figures, including Anna Leigh Waters, PPA Founder and CEO Connor Pardoe, and celebrity athletes like Drew Brees.
“It’s a lot of work. There’s no doubt that having a podcast isn't easy, and it’s not something that you can easily be successful at, even though it just feels like you set up a mic and a camera. There’s a lot more hard work that goes on behind the scenes, but it’s been rewarding,” said Bellamy. “It’s been a special part of this year in terms of growing my brand and connecting with the pickleball community on a deeper level.”
So does he have a favorite guest?
“I think my favorite was Ben Johns because the guy is just so smart with the game. I’m a nerd, so I liked that we could get more into the mechanics of the game. I love having a conversation with people who know the game better than me. Ben has been playing a lot longer than me, so just learning some of his insights was awesome,” explained Bellamy. “We also have one with Matt Wright coming out soon that’s one of my favorite interviews. Matt is probably the most articulate of anyone we’ve interviewed. He’s a lawyer and a really smart guy, so talking with him was great.”
Bellamy has also been growing his online platform by sharing gameplay tips and strategies.
He sees it as a perfect way to give back to the sport.
“I’m a nerd, so I like nerding out about the game. My instructional videos on YouTube and Instagram are a great way for me to share that content,” he said. “I would say that sometimes I have more fun making content than playing. It’s a good outlet for me.”
Bellamy also confirmed that he’s preparing to launch an online community called the Pickleball Collective where “people can nerd out on the game together.”
“I’m going to have some guests like Hunter Johnson, Yates Johnson, and Gabe Joseph, and we’re going to talk pickleball and share gameplay tips,” he said. “This year, I wanted to fully immerse myself in pickleball.”
