Tardio debuts signature pickleball shoe at Select Medical Orange County Cup
Did you see Gabe Tardio’s new signature pickleball shoes during Pickleballtv’s coverage of the Select Medical Orange County Cup?
The 19-year-old designed the “G1 Court Shoe” in collaboration with Chicago-based footwear brand Stria Sport.
According to a story by Sports Business Journal reporter Rob Schaefer published on Thursday, the sneaker will be available to the general public beginning with a limited pre-sale on Friday, July 4.
“The top players in basketball have signature shoes. We’re bringing that to pickleball,” said Stria Sport founder, Eric Porter. “Gabe’s an outstanding player and we’re super excited for the partnership. We feel like he’s worthy of having his own shoe.”
Schaefer writes that Tardio’s shoes have a variety of elements that make them a good option for players.
“Stria put an emphasis on ankle support (through a built-in ankle collar and heel counter to stabilize high-impact movements) and balance/control during quick-twitch movements (by incorporating a wider-than-typical base),” he explains. “The shoe also has an outer mesh for breathability.”
Tardio was reportedly very involved in the design process, which took months to complete.
“It’s a pretty substantial milestone that an athlete can have a signature shoe, as opposed to some of the more household brands that were exploring Gabe,” said Tardio’s agent, David Hathaway. “We had many offers for him with several major shoe manufacturers. This was an opportunity that we thought for him, at this stage of his career would be not only good publicity for his brand ... but also the opportunity to make outsized returns if those shoes sold well.”
Tardio is believed to be the youngest competitor to wear a signature shoe in professional pickleball.
“We’d obviously like it to be a long-term relationship,” said Hathaway. “We hope to sell millions of these shoes.”
