PADDLE SNAPSHOT
Six Zero Coral Pro
Six Zero Coral Pro Graphic.png

The original Coral was already one of the easiest all-court paddles to recommend, so the bar for a follow-up was high, but the Coral Pro clears it. This is a UPA-A only version of a category leader, built around a grittier diamond tough surface with roughly double the diamond dust of the original, and the result is a paddle that holds its spin better than almost anything on the market. That durability is a HUGE deal, because you're not just buying spin, you're buying spin that sticks around long after a lesser surface has gone slick.

If you're looking to level up your game with a paddle that's more balance than bazooka that is built to last, this is it. And the spin? It'll have you hunting topspin on shots that absolutely did not need it in the best way.

DEEP DIVE
How is the OWL USAP Approved?
No title set

If you've ever hit against an OWL, you know the puzzle: a surface that feels more like felt than sandpaper, producing some of the nastiest spin in the sport. So how did a paddle like that pass the Starrett roughness test, the same one that's gotten multiple paddles delisted? The short answer is that it didn't. It never took it. The OWL received a provisional approval that USAP kept internal, and that provisional status has secretly functioned as full tournament approval for more than two years while an entire product line launched underneath it. We put our questions directly to USAP, and their CTO Carl Schmits answered on the record. His answers are in the full deep dive, along with the timeline and the documents. Put on your tinfoil hat and dig in.

Swingweight & Twistweight: The Practical Guide
Swingweight Cover Photo.png

Two numbers show up in every paddle review, and they tell you far more about how a paddle actually plays than the static weight ever will.

Swing weight is how heavy the paddle feels when you swing it, driven by where the weight sits, not just how much there is.

Twist weight is how well the face resists twisting on off-center hits, which makes a huge difference in forgiveness.

The catch is that neither number means anything until you know the shape you're holding, because heavy on a widebody can be dead average on an elongated. That's exactly why we built a quick-reference table: pick your shape, find your numbers, and know before you buy.

THE SHORT LIST
If a paddle is getting tons of buzz, uses standout technology, or just plays darn good in our playtesting, it makes the list.

Spartus Spitfire
  • What: A hundred-dollar elongated option with a genuinely durable, tier-one grit surface
  • Why it's exciting: First budget paddle to crack the durable grit club, and it's USAP approved, which almost none of the durable grit crowd can say
  • When: Mid July, elongated shape coming first

J6CR Blue Grit
  • What: Honolulu's all-blue elongated with their Crystal Blue endurance surface
  • Why it's exciting: Elite spin that holds for the long haul, right up there with Hex Grit and Permagrit. UPA-only though, so check your events
  • When: Available now on pre-order, next drop ships mid-July.
→ Shop Now ($175.50 with code PADDLE REPORT)

Return of Nanotac
  • What: Proton bringing back the smooth, tacky surface that helped start the durable grit movement
  • Why it's exciting: The original actually gained spin with wear, and now it's coming on a lighter, more powerful core
  • When: Prototypes now, chasing dual UPA and USAP approval, so no date locked yet

HEAD Triflex Boom
  • What: HEAD's triple-density foam power paddle
  • Why it's exciting: The closest a legacy tennis brand has come to getting it right, with maybe the best handle and grip in the game
  • When: Available now

We answer your questions

Sandra asked: "Loved this article! Do you have any recommendations on short handle paddles? So hard to find!"

Thanks for the kind words! You're right that short handle paddles are harder to find nowadays, but they are still out there. My favorites are the CRBN4 Barrage as an elongated option with exceptional feel and forgiveness without giving up reach, the ProKennex Black Ace XF for someone looking for reach and pop in a lightweight package that is easy on the elbow, and the Honolulu J2CR short handle for someone looking for a full power top tier spin option in a hybrid shape.

Nancy Asks: "I am an older intermediate recreational player and I need a LIGHT weight racquet. I don’t see this type of racquet reviewed or recommended.

I am currently using a 7oz racquet, which is many years old, and I need to replace it with something similar, not heavier."

Hi Nancy, we have learned a lot about weight and how it impacts play over the last few years, and while most paddles are coming in heavier than they used to, there are some notable exceptions. The Franklin Aurelius, Anna Leigh Water's signature paddle comes in under 7.5 ounces which is incredibly light by modern standards and would be a great option to consider. I also like to recommend the lightweight version of the Six Zero Coral as a durable spin all-court option that's easy to handle.
