Seven essential pickleball skills to reach 5.0 level in 90 days

Becoming a 5.0-level pickleball player isn’t about flashy shots or elite athleticism.

It’s about smart decision-making, consistency, and understanding the game at a deeper level, so if you’re looking to level up quickly, these seven must-have skills explained by Tanner Tomassi will definitely transform your performance on the court.

1. Apply constant pressure at the kitchen line

Strong players make their presence felt at the net. Stay active with your feet, position your body behind every ball, and keep your opponent guessing. When you’re engaged and balanced, you create opportunities to speed up shots and control the rally.

2. Master the transition zone and resets

Getting to the kitchen line consistently is critical to winning points. The key is a controlled reset shot in the middle of the court. Instead of rushing through the transition zone, move forward with your shot, then stop completely before making contact. Balance and stillness lead to cleaner, more consistent resets.

3. Be strategic with your third shot drop

Most players can hit a decent third shot drop, but few place it correctly. Aim for the opponent who is still moving toward the kitchen line, not the one already set. This gives you more margin for error and puts immediate pressure on your opponent.

4. Use smart dinking patterns

Dinking isn’t just about keeping the ball in play, it’s about controlling angles. When hitting a neutral or defensive dink, aim for the middle to eliminate your opponent’s angles. Go wide only when you’re being aggressive and looking to create an attackable ball.

5. Develop a reliable backhand counter

A strong backhand counter prevents opponents from targeting you with speed-ups. Keep your paddle slightly favoring your backhand side, maintain a compact position near your body, and lean forward into the shot. Power comes from your body positioning, not just your arm.

6. Add power to your fourth shot

Many players give opponents an easy path to the kitchen after the third shot. Instead, use your fourth shot to apply pressure. Keep your wrist stable and generate topspin using your shoulder, not your wrist. This creates more power, control, and deception.

7. Speed up with intention

Random speed-ups won’t win you points, smart ones will. Focus on three variables: speed, spin, and placement. Test your opponent early to identify weaknesses, then vary your shots to disrupt their timing. Always observe your opponent’s positioning before attacking.

Reaching a 5.0 level in pickleball isn’t about hitting harder, it’s about thinking smarter. By mastering these seven skills, you’ll improve your consistency, control rallies, and start winning more points against stronger competition.

If you’re serious about improving your game, start incorporating these strategies into your training today.
