3 things to watch for on Saturday at MLP St. Louis

The Major League Pickleball season continues Saturday at MLP St. Louis, where 11 teams are in action across four days at Chaifetz Arena on the campus of Saint Louis University.

The first three days feature Group Play before the top 4 teams from each group advance to the Standing Point matches on Super Sunday.

Here are the groups for this week’s event:

Here is the order of play:

Now, let’s get into what to watch for.

  • Riley Newman is set to miss his second match of the weekend for the Brooklyn Pickleball Team with a bruised left foot tendon. As a result, Chris Haworth will get the starting nod against the SoCal Hard Eights in the day’s first match on Grandstand Court. He will play men’s doubles alongside Christian Alshon and mixed doubles with Jackie Kawamoto as Brooklyn looks to rebound from a 1-3 defeat at the hands of the Los Angeles Mad Drops. Newman is expected to return to action for Brooklyn’s second contest of the day against the Phoenix Flames.

  • 15-year-old Tama Shimabukuro will return to action for the Utah Black Diamonds on Saturday after missing their 4-0 victory over the SoCal Hard Eights with an illness on Friday. The Black Diamonds are currently in a four-way tie for third place in Group B with a 1-2 record, so Shimabukuro’s return will be a welcome site as they get ready to face the Phoenix Flames and Las Vegas Night Owls to close out their Group Play schedule.

  • One of the day’s most intriguing matchups projects to be the St. Louis Shock versus the Orlando Squeeze. With both teams at 2-0, the winner of this contest will put themselves in a great position to finish atop the Group A standings. The men’s doubles game pitting the Shock’s Hayden Patriquin/Gabe Tardio against the Squeeze’s Federico Staksrud/Jack Sock should deliver must-watch pickleball as well. This will be the second match of the day on Championship Court.

Live broadcast coverage from Chaifetz Arena begins at 9:30am CT on Pickleballtv.
