3 things to watch for on Saturday at the MLP Playoffs
The Major League Pickleball postseason continues Saturday with day 2 of the Toray MLP Playoffs, where Premier and Challenger level teams will compete in the quarterfinal (Premier) and semifinal (Challenger) rounds at Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego, CA.
Each quarterfinal and semifinal will be played as a best two-out-of-three-match series. Here are this weekend’s matchups:
- Premier QF: No. 8 Orlando Squeeze v. No. 1 St. Louis Shock (STL leads 1-0)
- Premier QF: No. 5 Columbus Sliders v. No. 2 Dallas Flash (DAL leads 1-0)
- Premier QF: No. 7 Texas Ranchers v. No. 3 New Jersey 5s
- Premier QF: No. 6 Los Angeles Mad Drops v. No. 4 Brooklyn Pickleball Team
- Challenger SF: No. 5 Bay Area Breakers v. No. 1 Las Vegas Night Owls
- Challenger SF: No. 3 California Black Bears v. Nashville Chefs

The winners of these series will advance to next week’s DoorDash MLP Finals, powered by Toray, which will take place August 22-24 in New York City.
Now, let’s get into what to watch for.
- Dekel Bar will return to competition for the Brooklyn Pickleball Team for the first time since early June after being sidelined with a rib injury. AJ Koller filled in admirably for the squad’s final four regular season events and helped Brooklyn secure a top 4 seed for the playoffs. Bar will resume his usual role, playing men’s doubles with Riley Newman and mixed doubles with Rachel Rohrabacher as Brooklyn kicks off their quarterfinal series against the Los Angeles Mad Drops.
- As a result of Dallas choosing to play Columbus in the quarterfinals, New Jersey chose to play against Texas. This is the second year in a row where the 5s and Ranchers have faced off in the postseason. New Jersey won their semifinal clash in 2024 and will be looking to replicate that success in the quarterfinals in 2025. Texas narrowly escaped an upset bid from the Miami Pickleball Club in Friday’s play-in round with a 21-19 DreamBreaker win and has not won in three tries against New Jersey this season, but a team as talented as the Ranchers has the ability to upset anyone.
- In Challenger, the California Black Bears are on a six-match winning streak that dates back to the beginning of MLP Salt Lake City. Martin Emmrich, who the team acquired from Miami at the trade deadline, has been a welcome addition to the squad and has an 8-3 record in his games so far. He will look to help the Black Bears continue their postseason surge on Saturday when they begin their quarterfinal series against Nashville.
Action begins at 11am PT on Pickleballtv.
