3 things to watch for on Thursday at PPA Cape Coral
The Zimmer Biomet Cape Coral Open continues Thursday with Round of 16 action in all five pro events.
Here is the day’s order of play:
Now, let’s get into what to watch for.
- No. 32 seed Connor Mogle is into the men’s singles Round of 16 after an 11-9, 1-11, 13-11 victory over No. 5 seed Connor Garnett on Wednesday. The newly signed UPA pro, whose stock is certainly rising ahead of this month's MLP draft, will next face No. 10 seed Dylan Frazier as he looks to continue his run. This will be the fourth match of the day on Showcase Court 2.
- In women’s singles, No. 5 seed Catherine Parenteau will take on No. 9 seed Judit Castillo in what should be a high-quality Round of 16 clash. Parenteau has won all head-to-head matchups while dropping just one game through six meetings, so Castillo will be looking to turn the tide in the day’s third match on Showcase Court 1.
- And in men’s doubles, Tama Shimabukuro/Yuta Funemizu are into the final 16 after an 11-3, 2-11, 11-1 victory over No. 8 seeds Tyson McGuffin/Max Freeman on Wednesday. To his further credit, Shimabukuro nearly pulled off a singles upset against Jaume Martinez Vich on Wednesday as well, falling 11-13 in the deciding game. The 15-year-old sensation will have a shot at redemption on Thursday when he and Funemizu take on Martinez Vich and Collin Johns with a spot in the men’s doubles quarterfinals on the line. This will be the seventh match of the day on Showcase Court 2.
