3 things to watch for on Thursday at PPA Worlds
The Jenius Bank Pickleball World Championships continue Thursday with Round of 16 action in all five pro events.
Here is the order of play:
Now, let’s get into what to watch for.
- No. 53 seed Rika Fujiwara is very quietly into the Round of 16 after coming through the qualifying rounds and securing main draw wins over No. 12 seed Salome Devidze and No. 22 seed Marcela Hones. Fujiwara has been competing in pickleball events throughout Asia and Australia for the past year after a successful tennis career that saw her reach career-high rankings of No. 13 in doubles and No. 84 in singles on the WTA Tour. She will next face No. 5 seed Lea Jansen on Thursday in the second match on Showcase Court 2.
- In men’s singles, No. 3 seed Christian Alshon and No. 13 seed Chris Haworth will clash for the first time since the final of the Virginia Beach Cup last month. Haworth won that meeting 11-8, 12-10, so Alshon will be out for revenge as he seeks to protect his high seed. This projects to be an incredibly high-quality Round of 16 contest and will appropriately be the second match of the day on Nature’s Sunshine Championship Court.
- And finally, a fun mixed doubles matchup will pit No. 7 seeds Catherine Parenteau/Dekel Bar against No. 21 seeds Milan Rane/Connor Garnett. Parenteau/Bar are teaming up for the first time since 2021 this week and have looked more comfortable with each match, while Rane/Garnet are fresh off a three-game victory over No. 9 seeds Tina Pisnik/Tyson McGuffin. Rane/Garnett made the quarterfinals of the Cincinnati Showcase in September and will be looking to make the final eight again this week in North Texas. This will be the fifth match on Showcase Court 2.
Live broadcast coverage from Brookhaven Country Club begins at 10am CT on Pickleballtv.
