Alshon, Daescu sweep Johnson, Tardio for first title together
Even though Christian Alshon is playing in three finals on Sunday, his hope coming in to today was to get at least one title.
It didn’t happen in mixed doubles, but men’s doubles was a different story for the 24-year-old. He and Andrei Daescu completed a three-game sweep of No. 2 seeds JW Johnson/Gabe Tardio, earning a 13-11, 11-2, 11-6 victory.
The opening game was a back-and-forth affair. Alshon/Daescu had leads of 5-1 and 10-7, but they had to save a game point at 10-11 before reeling off three in a row to take Game 1.
That result gave the No. 4 seeds the confidence to secure relatively comfortable triumphs in Games 2 and 3 and eventually close out the win in straight games.
Through two tournaments together, Alshon/Daescu have lost only one match together. That lone loss came in the semifinals of the PPA Masters to eventual champions Ben Johns/Collin Johns.
They half-avenged that defeat this week with a victory over Ben Johns/Hayden Patriquin in the semifinals.
“I think we’re competing really well together, and this match showed that. Christian has three shots at gold today while I have only one, so I wanted to make the most of this one,” Daescu said.
On that note, Alshon will go for his second gold in Tucson when he takes on Hunter Johnson in the men’s singles final later Sunday afternoon.
In the bronze medal match, the aforementioned Johns/Patriquin pairing defeated No. 13 seeds Rafa Hewett/Noe Khlif by an 11-4, 11-6 score line.
