Back from the brink: Fahey stages epic comeback to defeat Todd for women’s singles title

Kate Fahey closed out Carvana Championship Sunday at the Veolia North Carolina Open with a 4-11, 11-9, 11-6 victory over No. 6 seed Parris Todd.

The day’s final match was anything but straightforward.

Todd came out on fire and comfortably took the opening game, effectively passing Fahey from both wings as she tried to make her way up to the kitchen line.

She maintained that form—while Fahey struggled to settle into the match—in the second game to the point of a 9-5 lead.

That would be as close as she would come to the victory, however.

Fahey went on a six-point run to steal a win in Game 2 and let the momentum from that comeback effort carry her to a 9-1 lead in the decider, as she caught fire on her drives and found success with precise volleys at the kitchen line.

Todd did manage to bring the score to 6-9, but Fahey closed out the encounter a few moments later to secure her first title of the 2025 season.

Fahey was quick to applaud Todd’s performance in the day’s final contest.

“Parris is an incredible player. I always have a lot of trouble playing her,” she raved. “She’s also an amazing competitor, so even when I was up big in the third, I knew that she was fully capable of coming back.”

This win is extra special for the former University of Michigan tennis star, since she recently moved to Charlotte, NC.

“I’ve honestly never had a home crowd like this. I don’t think I would have gotten through that match without them,” she said. “I have a lot of family here—my mom, my dad, my uncle, and my fiancée—so it means everything to have my family with me and now my new family in North Carolina.”

No. 5 seed Lea Jansen will go home with the bronze medal (and her fourth straight podium finish in singles) after No. 8 seed Salome Devidze withdrew ahead of their match.
