Bar and Tellez, Patriquin and Newman march into men's doubles final
Dekel Bar and Pablo Tellez became the first duo to make the men’s doubles final with a 12-14, 11-1, 11-5 victory over No. 14 seeds Quang Duong/CJ Klinger.
The No. 4 seeds had two chances to close out a back-and-forth opening game, but Duong/Klinger took it 14-12 in front of a raucous crowd.
Like they did in their quarterfinal match against Tyson McGuffin/Jaume Martinez Vich, though, Bar/Tellez responded incredibly well after dropping Game 1 and took the next two comfortably to make the final.
“We felt like we had Game 1 on our paddle,” Bar said of the mentality going into the second and third games. “We knew we had the right gameplan and that we were playing well, so we knew we would have a good shot if we just kept going.
They did keep going, all the way to Championship Sunday.
Bar/Tellez will face Riley Newman/Hayden Patriquin with a gold medal on the line.
Hayden Patriquin/Riley Newman took the remaining spot in the men’s doubles final with a convincing 11-3, 11-7 victory over No. 3 seeds Matt Wright/Federico Staksrud.
Newman was quick to give Patriquin—more specifically, his aggressive right-side play—credit for the win.
“Hayden was really aggressive in the middle, and they didn’t really know what we were about to do at any given moment,” he noted. “I think that was the difference.”
With this win, Newman is into his first men’s doubles final since taking an extended break from competing in early 2024.
He continues to be impressed by the growing depth at the pro level.
“The competition is so good now,” he mentioned. “I think in years past, you could make the quarterfinals and even semifinals and maybe not break too much of a sweat because there weren’t as many players. Now, the draws are so deep where you won’t make if it you have your best.”
He and Patriquin will look to bring their best against Bar/Tellez on Sunday.
