7:45 p.m. CT: Bar/Tellez overcome slow start to advance past McGuffin/Martinez Vich
Dekel Bar/Pablo Tellez booked their spots in the men's doubles semifinals with a 6-11, 11-4, 11-3 victory over No. 6 seeds Tyson McGuffin/Jaume Martinez Vich.
The No. 4 seeds endured a tough start as their opponents came out strong, but they completely turned the tide of the match in Games 2 and 3 and sprinted to a win.
One of the keys for Bar/Tellez is how they use their length at the kitchen line; both players are known for creating erne opportunities and taking dinks out of the air.
"Being able to threaten with ernes is amazing because people can't hit wide or line dinks to us," Tellez explained. "They usually have to hit middle, which is to each of our forehands, so that's usually an advantage for us."
Bar/Tellez will face another lefty-righty combo in the form of Quang Duong/CJ Klinger on Saturday for a spot in the final.
7:00 p.m. CT: Duong/Klinger continue run, cruise past Alshon/Ignatowich
It can be easy to follow up a big win with a lapse in level, but that wasn't the case for Quang Duong and CJ Klinger on Friday evening.
After taking down top seeds Ben and Collin Johns in the Round of 16, the teenage tandem defeated No. 8 seeds Christian Alshon/James Ignatowich in the quarterfinals by an 11-6, 11-7 score line.
The athleticism of both players was on full display, as Duong's third shot drives created opportunities for the lengthy Klinger to crash.
The No. 14 seeds will face either Pablo Tellez/Dekel Bar or Tyson McGuffin/Jaume Martinez Vich in the semifinals.
6:40 p.m. CT: Jones, Black outlast Wright, Dizon in three games
Allyce Jones and Hurricane Tyra Black are into the women's doubles semifinals after a 12-10, 9-11, 11-7 victory over No. 3 seeds Etta Wright/Meghan Dizon.
The teams were tied at 7-7 in that final game, but the No. 7 seeds used a 4-0 run on a single sideout to secure the triumph.
They will face No. 2 seeds Anna Bright/Rachel Rohrabacher on Saturday in what will be the first match between the two teams since their epic battle in Virginia Beach in October, which Bright/Rohrabacher won by an 11-5, 4-11, 13-11 score line.
5:20 p.m. CT: Newman, Patriquin down No. 2 seed Frazier, Johnson in quarters
No. 7 seeded Riley Newman and Hayden Patriquin downed the No. 2 seeded Dylan Frazier and JW Johnson in three. The final score was 6-11, 11-8, 11-3.
“I definitely wanted to pinch the middle,” said Patriquin. “JW doesn’t like when you pinch the middle and try to take the rolls and just cross court. If one’s high enough, take it. And rolling those cross-court shots throws them off balance. That’s what we wanted to do, we wanted to grind them down.”
Newman and Patriquin lost game one and were down 8-2 in game two. It was looking like the No. 2 seeds were going to run away with another victory but Newman and Patriquin found their rhythm and came back to punch their ticket to the semis.
“I was speeding up too soon in game one,” said Newman. “But in game two we tried to slow down a little bit.”
Tomorrow, they will face off against No. 3 seeded Matt Wright and Federico Staksrud.
3:30 p.m. CT: Bright, Duong march into mixed doubles semis
Anna Bright/Quang Duong are one win away from making a Championship Sunday appearance in their first tournament together.
They battled past No. 7 seeds Tina Pisnik/Dekel Bar 11-8, 11-7 Friday afternoon to earn their third consecutive straight-game victory.
Bright attributes the first-time pairing's success to their shared energy.
"I really like our intensity," she mentioned. "I feel like we’re both never taking our foot off the gas no matter the score.”
This result sets up an intriguing semifinal clash between Bright/Duong and top seeds Anna Leigh Waters/Ben Johns on Saturday.
2:50 p.m. CT: Rohrabacher, Staksrud down Johnson siblings in straight games
Rachel Rohrabacher and Federico Staksrud booked their spots in the mixed doubles semifinals with an 11-8, 11-5 victory over No. 2 seeds JW and Jorja Johnson.
Rohrabacher was especially strong, frequently winning crosscourt dink rallies with Jorja Johnson to give Staksrud opportunities to move to the middle and attack.
This is the second time this year that Rohrabacher/Staksrud have beaten the Johnson siblings; they did so in Palm Springs at the Masters, the first tournament of the 2024 season.
The No. 8 seeds will face either Etta Wright/Christian Alshon or Lea Jansen/Noe Khlif on Saturday.
2:05 p.m. CT: Duong, H. Johnson advance to men's singles semifinals
Quang Duong and Hunter Johnson are into the final four in men's singles after each of them earned straight-game victories early Saturday afternoon.
Duong dispatched No. 5 seed Tyson McGuffin 11-5, 11-3 to set a clash with No. 21 seed Michael Loyd.
On the other side of the bracket, Johnson notched his third straight win over No. 3 seed Connor Garnett by an 11-0, 12-10 score line. He will face top seed Federico Staksrud for a chance to compete on Championship Sunday.
1:35 p.m. CT: Fahey outlasts Jansen in instant classic
Kate Fahey advanced to the women’s singles semifinals with a thrilling 11-4, 8-11, 14-12 victory over No. 3 seed Lea Jansen in what might go down as one of the matches of the season.
After players split the first two games, Fahey jumped out to a 7-3 lead in the third game.
Jansen, not deterred by the early deficit, then scored seven straight to earn match point at 10-7.
Fahey would not be denied, however, and saved five match points before eventually stealing the win at 14-12 to close out one of the most electrifying encounters of the year.
Fahey has been on absolute tear in singles in the latter half of 2024; she has earned five medals in the event since August, including two titles in Salt Lake City and Las Vegas.
I think it’s my grit,” the former University of Michigan tennis star said of her recent success. “I was super gritty in college and in junior tennis. I’m not the most talented person in the world, but I think I work as hard as I possibly can every match.”
The No. 9 seed will face No. 5 seed Salome Devidze on Saturday with a spot in the finals on the line.
12:15 p.m. CT: Loyd continues run, battles past JW Johnson
Michael Loyd picked up his second marquee victory in as many days with an 11-5, 12-10 triumph over No. 11 seed JW Johnson.
It looked like the No. 21 seed would cruise to the win when he earned a 9-2 lead in the second game, but Johnson reeled off eight points in a row to have a chance to extend the match.
Loyd hunkered down, though, and used a timeout to gather himself before using a three-point run to secure the win.
“I think the last round of timeouts was big for me just to give myself a chance to gather myself and remember my gameplan,” he shared. “I know it’s super cliché, but I feel like if I’m hitting the ball the way I know I’m capable of, I can beat anybody in the world.”
The 26-year-old has found his groove in singles during the second half of 2024. He made the semifinals at the Rate Championships in Las Vegas last month and also took out Ben Johns on Thursday to make the semifinals at Brookhaven Country Club.
Loyd will face either Tyson McGuffin or Quang Duong on Saturday.
11:35 a.m. CT: Waters, Devidze advance to semis with straight-game victories
Anna Leigh Waters and Salome Devidze booked their spots in the women's singles semifinals with straight-game victories Thursday morning.
Top-seeded Waters defeated No. 10 seed Judit Castillo 11-7, 11-0. She will face either Catherine Parenteau or Kaitlyn Christian on Saturday.
Devidze—the No. 5 seed this week—took down No. 18 seed Samantha Parker by an 11-7, 11-5 score line. She'll take on either Lea Jansen or Kate Fahey in the semifinals.
