Bouchard overcomes slow start, outlasts Fahey to advance in women’s singles
Genie Bouchard kicked off quarterfinal action in the Sunshine State with a 6-11, 11-7, 11-5 victory over top seed Kate Fahey.
Things looked bleak for Bouchard when she got down 0-6 in the second game after dropping Game 1, but the Wimbledon finalist used an 11-1 run to take Game 2 before comfortably winning the decider to secure her second consecutive victory over Fahey.
“It was a real battle out there,” Bouchard said afterwards. “I’ve realized how every ball matters, and, for me, I have to try and do something on every shot—not be passive but be super aggressive—and I think that’s what helped me win today.”
She also admitted that she wants to work on getting off to better starts in her matches.
“The same thing happened to me yesterday. I started trailing at the beginning, so I’ve got to work on that. I just feel like when my back’s against the wall, I kind of go for it more, and so I want to try to start that from the beginning next time,” she explained.
Bouchard will face No. 5 seed Catherine Parenteau, who won her quarterfinal against Brooke Buckner in three games, on Saturday for a spot in the final.
For Fahey, she will have a few hours to recover before taking the court again with Federico Staksrud in mixed doubles and Lacy Schneemann in women’s doubles.
