Chicago ends skid, outduels Utah in DreamBreaker
The Chicago Slice (4-10, 14pts) closed out their weekend with a DreamBreaker victory over the Utah Black Diamonds (6-9, 19pts).
The Slice came into Sunday’s matchup having been swept in their last three matches, but wins from Callie Smith/Vivian Glozman in women’s doubles and Smith/Max Freeman in mixed doubles helped Chicago force a deciding contest.
Smith again shined in the DreamBreaker, outscoring the Black Diamonds’ Genie Erokhina 5-3 through two rotations to help lead Chicago to a 21-19 triumph.
“We wanted to bring the energy and come out strong, and that’s what we did,” Smith said of the performance. “We stuck together and just fought for every point—that’s what pickleball is about. That’s what sports is about, and I’m just really proud of this team today.”
Glozman, who scored the winning point against Allyce Jones, joined the Slice just a few days ago after being traded from the Atlanta Bouncers earlier this week.
She spoke about the experience of joining her third new squad of the year right before a full weekend of matches.
“It’s been crazy,” she shared. “I think I’m the most traded player in MLP, but my team has been so supportive throughout the whole thing. Callie has been such a great leader and teammate, and I think she really pulled us through this one.”
Chicago will leave the Sunshine State after going 2-4 through six matches. The Slice will next be in action at the Edward Jones MLP Mid-Season Tournament, set to run July 9-13 in Grand Rapids, MI.
