Columbus sweeps Brooklyn thanks to gender doubles comebacks

The Columbus Sliders and Brooklyn Pickleball Team both played at the most recent Major League Pickleball events in San Clemente and New York, but they surprisingly never shared the court.

That changed on Friday at the Edward Jones MLP Mid-Season Tournament, where the squads—seeded 5th and 4th, respectively—faced off in the day’s most highly anticipated matchup.

The Sliders took the win with a 3-0 sweep, but it sure didn’t come easily.

In women’s doubles, Lea Jansen/Parris Todd overcame an 8-10 deficit and saved one game point to defeat Rachel Rohrabacher/Jackie Kawamoto 12-10 in one of the best games of the season so far.

“I felt like the points were so high quality on both sides. Rachel and Jackie played amazing, and I felt like towards the end that anyone could really win and pull away,” Todd said of the contest. “It really came down to Lea and I trusting each other; honestly, that’s what got us across the finish line.”

Andrei Daescu/CJ Klinger delivered a similarly riveting comeback effort in men’s doubles, overcoming a 6-10 deficit and saving four game points on their way to a 14-12 victory over Riley Newman/AJ Koller.

“We were just learning from the girls. Obviously, they were showing us the way,” Daescu joked. “I don’t think we played our best in men’s, but [AJ and Riley] are tough. They were making it very difficult for us and not letting us get comfortable, so we just had to hang in there and take everything that we could.”

That win gave Columbus all the momentum, and Todd/Daescu took full advantage by beating Rohrabacher/Koller 11-1 in the first mixed doubles game to clinch the sweep and advance to the semifinals.

The Sliders will take on the top-seeded Dallas Flash in the semifinals on Saturday. Dallas won the lone meeting between these teams in Orlando 3-1, so Columbus will be looking to turn the tide in Grand Rapids.
