Dallas gets revenge, hands New Jersey first loss of season
KAYSVILLE, UT - The last time the Dallas Flash and the New Jersey 5s faced off, a spot in the MLP mid-season tournament finals was on the line.
New Jersey won that matchup 3-1, thanks to key victories in mixed doubles.
One of those key victories was Mari Humberg and Zane Navratil’s 30-28 triumph over Jorja and JW Johnson.
Humberg and Navratil—both great players in their own right—hadn’t won a match together at that point, while the Johnsons had medaled at four consecutive PPA tournaments.
That result was surprising, to say the least.
So even though Thursday’s match was, on paper, just another regular season match, it’s not hard to imagine that the Johnson siblings—along with the rest of the Flash—wanted to avenge their defeat from a few weeks ago.
Thursday’s contest began just like it did in Grand Rapids, with Dallas’ JW Johnson and Augie Ge earning the men’s doubles point and Humberg and Anna Leigh Waters earning the women’s doubles point for New Jersey.
The match was tied going into mixed doubles, just like last time.
But unlike last time, the Johnsons secured a 25-21 victory over Humberg and Navratil to put Dallas up 2-1 going into the fourth match.
In that final bout, Ge and Hurricane Tyra Black outlasted Waters and Will Howells 25-23 to secure the regulation win and hand New Jersey its first loss of the season.
“We just wanted to play how we know we’re capable of and come out and make a statement in mixed,” Jorja Johnson said of the effort.
Consider the statement made.
Both New Jersey and Dallas have one more match to play on Thursday. The 5s will take on the Columbus Sliders, while the Flash will face the Los Angeles Mad Drops.
