Johnson, Frazier strike gold in San Clemente as Frazier takes over No. 1 ranking
SAN CLEMENTE, CA - JW Johnson and Dylan Frazier defeated No. 5 seeds Hayden Patriquin and Pablo Tellez 11-7, 11-7, 11-6 to claim the men’s doubles title at the Select Medical Orange County Cup presented by FitVine Wine.
It was a clinical performance from the No. 2 seeds; they were able to chill their red-hot opponents, who came into the match flying high after dispatching the top-seeded Johns brothers in the quarterfinals.
The champs were quick to applaud Patriquin and Tellez, who made it to Championship Sunday as a first-time partnership.
“What a run for Hayden and Pablo,” Frazier said. “They had some really good wins and played super tough, so we had to bring our best stuff out there.”
Sunday’s victory secures Johnson and Frazier’s fifth title of 2024, but it is by no means just another title for them. It’s the title that officially moves Frazier to the top of the PPA men’s doubles rankings.
When the rankings update on Monday, Frazier will overtake Ben Johns as the player with the most tour points in the event over the past 52 weeks. Johnson will also overtake Collin Johns to move to No. 3 in the world.
“It’s an honor and a privilege to hold that title,” Frazier mentioned of the achievement. “I couldn’t do it with anyone else next to me except for J-Dub. I just happened to play a couple tournaments that he didn’t play, but it was definitely a team effort to get here. It’s been in sight the last few weeks, so I’m happy to finally be here.”
No. 4 seeds Tyson McGuffin and Dekel Bar downed No. 12 seeds Julian Arnold and Jack Munro 11-9, 8-11, 11-2 to capture the bronze medal.
