Johnson siblings end Truong, Oncins’ run to make mixed final
Jorja Johnson/JW Johnson closed out Friday’s action on Humana Championship Court with an 11-3, 11-6 victory over No. 26 seeds Alix Truong/Eric Oncins.
Truong/Oncins had a career-best day as a partnership, beating Catherine Parenteau/Christian Alshon, Allyce Jones/Travis Rettenmaier, and Jessie Irvine/Gabe Tardio in consecutive matches just to make it to the semifinals.
But the No. 2 seeds brought their ‘A’ game when they needed it, as JW’s crosscourt backhand dinks put Oncins under a lot of pressure and frequently forced mistakes.
That helped the siblings put together their cleanest performance of the day and earn the win in two games.
Two of their earlier matches had gone to three games, and their quarterfinal bout against Lea Jansen/Riley Newman finished up 14-12 in the deciding game.
JW spoke about the importance of fitness on days, like Friday, where he and his sister put in over three and half hours on court.
“Part of the ability to do that comes from our fitness,” he said. “The work we put in and the conditioning we do helps us to be really fit and be able to compete well for the whole day.”
The siblings will face top seeds Anna Leigh Waters/Ben Johns on Sunday.
