5:50 p.m. PT: Glozman, Jk. Kawamoto battle past Smith, Todd
Vivian Glozman/Jackie Kawamoto are into the women's doubles quarterfinals after an 11-6, 11-9 victory over No. 5 seeds Callie Smith/Parris Todd.
The No. 21 seeds began the week in the qualifying draw because Glozman doesn't have a UPA gold card, but they haven't let the extra day of competition slow them down: they're into the quarters after winning all three of their matches so far in straight games.
They will face No. 4 seeds Lacy Schneemann/Meghan Dizon on Friday for a spot in the semifinals.
3:20 p.m. PT: Pisnik, Bar overcome slow start to advance in mixed doubles
Tina Pisnik/Dekel Bar kept their gold medal hopes in Palm Springs alive with a 1-11, 13-11, 11-5 victory over No. 9 seeds Lea Jansen/Andrei Daescu.
The No. 6 seeds overcame a 4-7 deficit in the second game and saved one match point at 10-11 before stealing Game 2 and cruising to a comfortable win in Game 3.
Now just one win away from making the semifinals in the first slam of the year on the PPA Tour, Pisnik/Bar will take on No. 4 seeds Catherine Parenteau/Federico Staksrud on Friday.
1:50 p.m. PT: Black, Alshon advance with victory over Schneemann, McGuffin
The first-time pairing of Tyra Black/Christian Alshon surged into the mixed doubles quarterfinals with an 11-2, 12-10 triumph over No. 10 seeds Lacy Schneemann/Tyson McGuffin.
The No. 7 seeds started off well, with Alshon's drives forcing multiple errors from his opponents. Schneemann/McGuffin eventually found their form and jumped out to an 8-2 lead in the second game, but Black/Alshon fought all the way back to take the win and avoid having to play a third game.
They will face either Anna Bright/Hayden Patriquin or Lucy Kovalova/Matt Wright on Friday for a spot in the semifinals.
1:45 p.m. PT: Waters, Johns reach mixed doubles quarterfinals
The top-seeded tandem of Anna Leigh Waters and Ben Johns defeated No. 48 Christa Gecheva and Collin Johns 11-4, 11-4 on Humana Championship Court.
Also reaching the quarterfinals was No. 7 Tyra Black and Christian Alshon (defeated No. 10 Lacy Schneemann and Tyson McGuffin).
1:05 p.m. PT: Sock earns three-game victory over Frazier, advances to quarters
No. 9 Jack Sock defeated No. 5 Dylan Frazier 11-9, 7-11, 11-5 on Humana Championship Court to continue his impressive singles run at Mission Hills Country Club.
Frazier was the defending gold medalist in men's singles at The Masters.
The wind was definitely a factor during the head-to-head matchup.
"It was crazy. We were .3 above the average on the wind scale or meter, and they wanted to hold us for a little bit, which is kind of strange, even though the conditions were psychotic the entire time," said Sock. "It was literally all about just moving your feet and being ready for whatever's going to happen. The wiffle ball moves around a lot in the wind, a little more than a tennis ball. It's all about footwork out there right now."
Sock will face No. 2 Connor Garnett on Friday.
Also reaching the quarterfinals in men's singles were No. 14 Gabriel Joseph (defeated No. 3 Hunter Johnson) and No. 26 Julian Arnold (defeated No. 24 Noe Khlif).
11:55 a.m. PT: Bouchard ousts Buckner, advances to quarterfinals
No. 15 Genie Bouchard delivered a major upset in women's singles with a 2-11, 11-7, 11-3 victory over No. 2 Brooke Buckner on Humana Championship Court.
Bouchard advanced to the quarterfinals of a Slam on the PPA Tour for the first time.
It wasn't an easy victory by any means for the Canadian star, who continues to steadily develop her pickleball game after debuting just one year ago.
"I'm not sure [how I did it]. I thought after that first game, I was just going to get completely killed," said Bouchard. "That one side I started on was tough. I was against the wind, and she has really heavy shots, so I felt like there wasn't much I could do. Switching sides, I felt like I could dictate a little bit more, and I just told myself to stop missing so many balls, to be a little bit more aggressive, and just be super athletic."
She will face No. 5 Kaitlyn Christian on Friday.
Also advancing to the quarterfinals were No. 6 Kate Fahey (defeated No. 20 Milan Rane), No. 7 Parris Todd (defeated No. 12 Jorja Johnson), and No. 8 Mary Brascia (defeated Dominique Schaefer).
Fahey will face No. 1 Anna Leigh Waters in the next round.
11:20 a.m. PT: Staksrud overcomes challenge from Ford to reach quarterfinals
Top-seeded Federico Staksrud defeated No. 48 Zane Ford 12-10, 11-2 on Grandstand Court to advance to the quarterfinals.
Ford actually led 9-4 in the opening stanza, before Staksrud battle all the way back to take the game and ultimately secure the match.
The pair previously met in the men's singles final of the Daytona Beach Open presented by ROAR Organic in December, which was claimed by Staksrud, so this was shaping up as a rather intriguing battle.
Also advancing to the men's singles quarters in the early action were No. 6 Tyson McGuffin (defeated No. 11 JW Johnson), No. 7 Jaume Martinez Vich (defeated No. 10 Michael Loyd), and No. 8 Christian Alshon (defeated No. 12 Pablo Tellez).
10:35 a.m. PT: Waters downs Truluck, punches ticket to singles quarterfinals
Top seed Anna Leigh Waters was flawless in her 11-2, 11-4 victory over No. 14 Liz Truluck on Humana Championship Court.
Waters advanced to the quarterfinals with the triumph.
Also advancing to the women's quarters in the early action were No. 3 Lea Jansen (defeated No. 24 Jessie Irvine), No. 4 Catherine Parenteau (defeated No. 16 Layne Sleeth), and No. 5 Kaitlyn Christian (defeated No. 10 Lina Padegimaite).
