6:00 p.m. PT: Stage set for women's doubles semifinals
Here are Saturday's matchups:
- No. 1 Anna Leigh Waters/Catherine Parenteau v. No. 21 Vivian Glozman/Jackie Kawamoto
- No. 2 Anna Bright/Rachel Rohrabacher v. No. 3 Jorja Johnson/Tyra Black
4:30 p.m PT: Glozman, Jk. Kawamoto outlast Schneemann, Dizon in three games
Vivian Glozman/Jackie Kawamoto overcame a slow start against No. 4 seeds Lacy Schneemann/Meghan Dizon to book their spots in the women's doubles quarterfinals.
The No. 21 seeds—who began this week in the qualifying draw—got off to a slow start and dropped the opening game, but they found their form from there and eventually earned the triumph by a 6-11, 11-8, 11-2 score line.
They will next face top seeds Anna Leigh Waters/Catherine Parenteau in the semifinals.
3:20 p.m. PT: Stage set for mixed doubles semifinals
Here are Saturday's matchups:
- No. 1 Anna Leigh Waters/Ben Johns v. No. 7 Tyra Black/Christian Alshon
- No. 4 Catherine Parenteau/Federico Staksrud v. Rachel Rohrabacher/James Ignatowich
3:15 p.m. PT: Rohrabacher, Ignatowich upset Johnson siblings despite Ignatowich's injury
D.C. Pickleball Team partners Rachel Rohrabacher/James Ignatowich powered their way into the mixed doubles semifinals with an 11-6, 11-8 triumph over No. 2 seeds Jorja Johnson/JW Johnson.
The impressive win didn't come without its complications, however.
Trailing 7-8 in Game 2, Ignatowich was forced to take a medical timeout due to a back injury. The 24-year-old was eventually able to return and close out the match in two games alongside his MLP teammate.
Ignatowich's status will be worth monitoring ahead of he and Rohrabacher's semifinal clash with No. 4 seeds Catherine Parenteau/Federico Staksrud on Saturday.
2:35 p.m. PT: Black, Alshon surge into semis with victory over Bright, Patriquin
Tyra Black/Christian Alshon continued their impressive run in Palm Springs with an 11-9, 11-9 victory over No. 3 seeds Anna Bright/Hayden Patriquin.
The No. 7 seeds let a 6-0 advantage in the second game turn into an 8-9 deficit, but they rallied to score the match’s final three points and secure the victory in two games.
Alshon says that he and Black’s length make them scrappy defenders.
“I think we both have really good defense. I mean, Tyra’s defense might even be better than mine,” he mentioned. “She’s got a really good two-handed backhand from the baseline, so I think whenever we’re behind in a point, we can hang in there and get back in it.”
Black/Alshon will take on top seeds Anna Leigh Waters/Ben Johns in the semifinals.
2:00 p.m. PT: Parenteau, Staksrud complete comeback, advance to mixed semis
Despite dropping the opening stanza, No. 4 Catherine Parenteau and Federico Staksrud rallied for a 1-11, 11-8, 11-7 victory over No. 6 Tina Pisnik and Dekel Bar on Grandstand Court.
Parenteau and Staksrud will face the winner of the match between No. 2 Jorja Johnson and JW Johnson and No. 5 Rachel Rohrabacher and James Ignatowich.
1:30 p.m. PT: Waters, Johns advance to semi-finals in mixed doubles
The top-seeded tandem of Anna Leigh Waters and Ben Johns made easy work of No. 8 Jessie Irvine and Gabe Tardio on Humana Championship Court.
The final score was 11-2, 11-2 in favor of the sport's most dominant mixed duo.
"We had a couple of strategic points, but mostly I think we just played with a lot of energy," said Johns. "Maybe it was the wind dying down. Just playing in calm conditions is nice. The ball felt good and pretty crisp. It's dry out here, so it's pretty optimal conditions."
Waters and Johns will face the winner of the match between No. 3 Anna Bright and Hayden Patriquin and No. 7 Tyra Black and Christian Alshon.
12:55 p.m. PT: Stage set for men's and women's singles semi-finals
Here are Saturday's matchups:
No. 1 Federico Staksrud vs. No. 6 Tyson McGuffin
No. 2 Connor Garnett vs. No. 7 Jaume Martinez Vich
No. 1 Anna Leigh Waters vs. No. 7 Parris Todd
No. 4 Catherine Parenteau vs. No. 5 Kaitlyn Christian
12:50 p.m. PT: Todd frustrates Jansen, punches ticket to semis
No. 7 Parris Todd defeated No. 3 Lea Jansen 11-3, 11-7 on Humana Championship Court.
Todd will face top seed Anna Leigh Waters in the semi-finals on Saturday
12:40 p.m. PT: Martinez Vich outduels Arnold to earn semis berth
No. 7 Jaume Martinez Vich registered a convincing 11-1, 11-2 victory over No. 26 Julian Arnold on Grandstand Court to reach the men's singles semi-finals.
The match lasted just 21 minutes from start to finish.
Martinez Vich will face No. 2 Connor Garnett on Saturday.
12:05 p.m. PT: Garnett downs Sock, advances to semis
No. 2 Connor Garnett defeated No. 9 Jack Sock by a score of 11-2, 11-8 on Humana Championship Court.
Regardless of the final result, Sock definitely made Garnett work for it.
"Jack's forehand is deadly, so when he's able to create, especially on that inside-out, he was having a lot of success in that second game," said Garnett. "I just had to weather the storm there and get into his backhand a little bit. I had a few good breaks and I was able to stick with it and get the win."
12:00 p.m. PT: McGuffin outlasts Joseph in three-game thriller
It took 77 minutes for No. 6 Tyson McGuffin to finally get the best of No. 14 Gabriel Joseph in an epic battle on Grandstand Court.
The scoreline tells the story - 11-9, 11-13, 14-12 - in favor of McGuffin, who will face No. 1 Federico Staksrud in the semi-finals on Saturday.
The 35-year-old continues to impress with his performance in the desert.
11:30 a.m. PT: Christian eliminates Bouchard in straight-games masterpiece
No. 5 Kaitlyn Christian secured a convincing 11-4, 11-0 victory over No. 15 Genie Bouchard to reach the women's singles semi-finals.
Christian will face No. 4 Catherine Parenteau on Saturday.
The University of Southern California (USC) product is brimming with confidence - and with good reason.
"I went through a lot of finals last year, and I was just really happy to finish the year with a gold [in Daytona]. I put in a lot of work for that, so I'm just really happy to carry that energy into this year," said Christian. "Genie's a great player. She had a great win against Brooke [Buckner], and I was really happy to get a good win over her. I'm excited for Catherine on Saturday."
10:55 a.m. PT: Staksrud ousts Alshon in 18 minutes, punches ticket to semis
Top seed Federico Staksrud didn't give No. 8 Christian Alshon much to work with at all.
The Argentinian cruised to an 11-2, 11-1 victory on Humana Championship Court to advance to the men's singles semi-finals.
During his post-match interview on Pickleballtv, Staksrud acknowledged that Alshon was facing a bit of an uphill battle in singles this week after returning to the discipline from injury.
"First of all, it was great to see Chrisitan back in singles. I know he was fighting a couple of injuries, so I told him right after I shook his hand, 'It was good to see you in the draw.' I was just happy to see him," said Staksrud. "I knew he was going to be a little bit rusty with it being his first tournament back. Singles is rough. It's all about confidence and hitting your shots, so I just wanted to put a lot of pressure on every point and just make sure that he felt that he needed to earn every point, and I think that's what I did."
10:35 a.m. PT: Parenteau battles back, downs Brascia to earn spot in semis
After dropping the opening game, No. 4 Catherine Parenteau found a way to ultimately defeat No. 8 Mary Brascia on Grandstand Court and secure a spot in the semis.
The final score in favor of the Canadian star was 4-11, 11-9, 11-1.
10:25 a.m. PT: Waters dominates Fahey to reach women's singles semi-finals
Top seed Anna Leigh Waters made quick work of No. 6 Kate Fahey to begin the day.
The 17-year-old star secured an 11-3, 11-1 victory on Humana Championship Court in just 25 minutes.
Waters talked pickleball during her post-match interview on Pickleballtv, of course, but she also spoke about the devastating fires elsewhere in the Golden State right now.
"Fortunately, we're safe here in Palm Springs, but a lot of stuff is going on in LA, and I just pray for all those people. I'm super thankful for all the firefighters who are out there fighting these fires," she said. "Everybody, even though you love watching pickleball, make sure you keep up with what's going on in California."
