New Jersey, Los Angeles advance to Premier level semifinals
The New Jersey 5s and Los Angeles Mad Drops closed out their respective quarterfinal series Sunday afternoon to book their spots in next week’s DoorDash MLP Finals, powered by Toray.
Both teams achieved sweeps in their opening matches on Saturday but were pushed more on Sunday.
New Jersey kicked off the day’s coverage by outlasting the Texas Ranchers in a DreamBreaker.
It looked like the 5s were on their way to another sweep when Anna Leigh Waters/Meghan Dizon and Will Howells/Noe Khlif won their respective gender doubles games for New Jersey, but the Ranchers’ pairings of Kaitlyn Christian/Chistian Alshon and Tina Pisnik/Eric Oncins rebounded to win both mixed doubles games and force a DreamBreaker.
Waters took over in that deciding contest, outscoring Kaitlyn Christian 7-1 through two rotations to lift New Jersey to a 21-13 triumph and end the Ranchers’ season.
The world No. 1 spoke about what it took to find her best singles after losing mixed doubles earlier in the match. She contrasted Saturday’s experience with New Jersey’s match against the St. Louis Shock at MLP Dallas, where she struggled in the DreamBreaker after losing in mixed.
“I felt like when we played the Shock and Will and I lost that mixed game to go into the DreamBreaker, I kind of let the mixed game affect me, and I was focused more on that than my singles points,” she recalled. “Today, I really wanted to focus on singles after losing the mixed and be ready for that and win as many points for my team as I possibly could. I’ve been practicing certain DreamBreaker scenarios back home, and I feel a lot more confident. If we go to a DreamBreaker, I’m ready.”
She certainly was ready on Sunday.
In the next match, the Mad Drops moved past the Brooklyn Pickleball Team to pull off the weekend’s first series upset by seeding.
Brooklyn struck first with Rachel Rohrabacher/Jackie Kawamoto’s win in women’s doubles, but Los Angeles went on to take the next three games to secure a regulation win and advance to the semifinals.
Hunter Johnson, who closed out the victory alongside Jade Kawamoto in the second mixed doubles game, spoke about the squad’s confidence heading into New York City.
“We’re really rolling as a team,” he said. “We’re having fun—that’s the Mad Drops way—so I’m excited to go to the Big Apple and see what we can do there.”
The St. Louis Shock are the only other team to have earned a semifinal berth as of this writing. Whoever wins the third match between the Dallas Flash and Columbus Sliders later Sunday afternoon will take the final spot.
