Oncins, Wright prevail in men's doubles battle with Frazier, Johnson

No. 7 Eric Oncins and Matt Wright had reason to celebrate on Friday after posting an 11-8, 9-11, 11-8 men's doubles quarterfinal triumph over No. 4 Dylan Frazier and JW Johnson at the Rate Vegas Cup presented by Holland America.

Oncins and Wright will face No. 2 Christian Alshon and Andrei Daescu in the semis.

"It's one of those matches that could've gone either way. There were huge momentum swings," said Wright. "We played JW and Noe Khlif in Mesa and had a huge lead, a lot of match points in Game 2, and ended up losing that match 11-0 in the third. It just got away from us quickly. After Game 2 in this match, we set the strategy. It was still good, but we just needed to execute a little better. We wanted to come out with a ton of energy, the opposite of Mesa, and we got a 6-0 lead on the good side, and we held on."

Elsewhere, top seeds Ben Johns and Gabe Tardio moved one step closer to adding another men's doubles gold medal to their respective resumes with an 11-7, 11-6 victory over No. 40 Luc Pham and Will MacKinnon.

Johns and Tardio will face No. 3 Federico Staksrud and Hayden Patriquin in the semifinals.

The pair has seven men's doubles titles together since officially joining forces earlier this year, including five consecutive golds at PPA tournaments between June 22 and September 14.
