Patriquin, Newman cruise past Bar, Tellez for men’s doubles title
Hayden Patriquin and Riley Newman struck gold in their first tournament together with an 11-4, 11-6, 11-8 victory over No. 4 seeds Dekel Bar and Pablo Tellez.
Like they had done in their semifinal triumph over Matt Wright and Federico Staksrud, the No. 7 seeds dictated a vast majority of the kitchen rallies with a combination of smart attacks and quick hands.
This was just Patriquin and Newman’s first time playing together, but they ran through a stacked draw and dropped just two games en route to the title.
“It feels amazing,” Patriquin said of earning a title at the biggest tournament of the year. “I’ve been working hard, and it’s paying off, and I’m really excited to see what the next year has in store. Hopefully I can get a few more tournaments with Riley next year, too.
This result gives Newman—one of the veterans of the sport—his first title of the year. The 31-year-old says that support from his loved ones has been especially important in 2024.
“This past year has been really tough not being able to win as much as I would like to, so the support I’ve been getting from my friends and my family has been amazing,” he mentioned.
One of the keys for the pair was combatting the third shots of Bar and Tellez, who are both known for using their length to attack their opponents’ fourth shots.
“We were really trying to work on getting our returns deep in the court because their third shot drives are so incredible,” Newman explained. “The focus was getting the returns deep and then getting that first volley down.”
Patriquin and Newman will look to stay unbeaten as a partnership next week in Wisconsin, where they’ll play together at the Veolia Milwaukee Open.
In the bronze medal match, No. 3 seeds Matt Wright/Federico Staksrud defeated No. 14 seeds Quang Duong/CJ Klinger by a 3-11, 14-12, 11-6 score line.
