Pham takes down Frazier as upsets pile up in men’s singles

Luc Pham is into the men’s singles Round of 32 in Mesa after an 11-2, 11-9 victory over No. 12 seed Dylan Frazier.

The No. 52 seed, who signed with the PPA Tour in December, is wasting no time establishing himself on the pro circuit with wins like Tuesday’s.

“It was a scrappy match with a lot of back and forth,” Pham said of the performance. “The second set was really close, really tight. Dylan was hitting a lot of great passing shots and great volleys, so I was trying to do my best to get around him because he’s a great singles player.”

The 22-year-old is all-in on pickleball after graduating from the University of Southern California last May with a degree in human biology.

“I’m blessed to play pickleball. I just recently signed, so I’m playing as many tournaments as I can. I’m going to be playing a lot of tournaments throughout the US and Asia, and I can’t wait to play more,” he mentioned.

This upset wasn’t Tuesday’s only notable men’s singles result, however.

Earlier in the day, No. 72 seed Matthew Barlow stunned No. 6 seed Roscoe Bellamy by a 9-11, 11-9, 11-2 score line.

Both Pham and Barlow will be back in action in Wednesday, with Pham scheduled to face No. 17 seed Cason Campbell and Barlow set to take on No. 30 seed Mota Alhouni.
