Pisnik, Oncins shock Bright, Patriquin in quarterfinal upset
No. 3 seeds Anna Bright and Hayden Patriquin appeared to be in control of their mixed doubles quarterfinal match against No. 10 seeds Tina Pisnik and Eric Oncins on Friday after winning the opening game 11-2.
But Pisnik and Oncins weren't prepared to pack their bags. Not by a long shot.
The feisty tandem won the second game 11-7, and sealed the come-from-behind upset victory with another 11-7 triumph in the deciding stanza to continue their notable run at the SXY Newport Beach Open presented by JOOLA.
Oncins and Pisnik will face No. 2 seeds Jorja Johnson and JW Johnson on Semifinal Saturday in Southern California.
The Johnsons actually won their first mixed doubles title together at this tournament in 2023, beating Lacy Schneemann and Tyson McGuffin in a two-out-of-three final on CBS.
Jorja and JW have also claimed mixed doubles crowns at PPA Tour stops in Mesa, North Carolina, Sacramento, and Daytona—all in 2025.
