Sock, Tellez surge into semis with three-game victory over Oncins, Frazier
On a day where Jack Sock took down top-seeded Chris Haworth in men’s singles, the two-time Olympic medalist then teamed up with Pablo Tellez to defeat No. 4 seeds Eric Oncins/Dylan Frazier 4-11, 11-8, 11-3 in the men’s doubles quarterfinals.
The No. 10 seeds struggled in the opening game, but they adopted a more aggressive gameplan in Games 2 and 3 that helped them pull off the comeback and advance to their first semifinal as a partnership.
“We like to call it ‘Backyard Pickleball’—kind of like a ‘locked in Backyard Pickleball,’” Sock said of the partnership’s game style. “We obviously dink and try to do all the ‘Pickleball 101’ things well, but we also like our hands and we like things to be a little chaotic. We tried to have a blend of that in Games 2 and 3, instead of letting them dictate like they did in Game 1. [Oncins and Frazier] are too good of a team to be on defense against, so we had to try to kind of pull the trigger a little bit and be on the offensive more.”
This win sets Sock up to compete in multiple semifinals for the first time in his career.
He will face No. 12 seed Zane Ford in singles before he and Tellez take on No. 2 seeds JW Johnson/CJ Klinger in men’s doubles.
