Staksrud, Tardio move past Tellez, Daescu in three games
Federico Staksrud/Gabe Tardio are into the men’s doubles final after a 7-11, 11-4, 11-2 victory over No. 4 seeds Pablo Tellez/Andrei Daescu.
After dropping the first game, the top seeds found the level that helped them take gold earlier this year at the Selkirk Kansas City Open and took Games 2 and 3 comfortably.
For Tardio, the key was cleaning up errors and making better decisions.
“We just had to be a little more solid than we were in the first game and try and move them around more,” he explained. “It was really a combination of that and choosing better shots to attack.”
With this win, Tardio is into his second gold medal match in Milwaukee; the 19-year-old will also compete for the mixed doubles title alongside Jessie Irvine on Sunday.
“I think I’m just really good at picking partners that match my game style and that I’m friends with on and off the court,” he said of his success in 2024. “That’s been the main thing.”
Staksrud/Tardio will face either No. 7 seeds James Ignatowich/CJ Klinger or No. 11 seeds Julian Arnold/Blaine Hovenier as they look to capture their second title of the year together.
