Todd outduels Christian in two hard-fought games

Parris Todd claimed her third career PPA singles title with a grueling 12-10, 12-10 victory over top-seeded Kaitlyn Christian early Sunday afternoon.

Christian had game points in each contest, but Todd held strong in both to avoid a decider and capture her first singles title since the Tucson Open in February.

After a similarly tight semifinal victory over Brooke Buckner on Saturday, the No. 2 seed knew that nothing would be easy in the gold medal match.

“Kaitlyn’s such a great player all around. I knew I had to come in and play my best, and she played really well,” Todd said afterwards. “I thought we were going to split games there, so I’m glad I was able to finish it off in two.”

In a touching post-match moment, Todd acknowledged her support system and specifically her father, who she revealed suffered a heart attack earlier this year.

“My grandparents are here, and my dad is here. My dad actually had a heart attack a few months ago, and the fact that he’s able to here is—we thought we were gonna lose him. Just having friends and family around me means everything,” she said.

In the bronze medal match, No. 3 seed Brooke Buckner defeated No. 9 seed Judit Castillo by a 12-10, 11-1 score line.
