Waters, Bright clinch women's doubles semifinals berth
It was early in the second game of Friday's women's doubles semifinal at the Rate Vegas Cup presented by Holland America that Anna Leigh Waters needed a medical timeout for some minor repairs.
Unfortunately, she was the victim of "friendly fire" from her teammate, Anna Bright, whose paddle accidentally connected with Waters' left index finger on a follow through during a return attempt.
Once Waters' digit was patched up, though, it was business as usual as she and Bright cruised to an 11-1, 11-2 quarterfinal victory over No. 11 Brooke Buckner and Zoey Wang.
The top-seeded tandem will face No. 4 Catherine Parenteau and Jade Kawamoto in the semis on Saturday.
"I'm OK. I said, 'That's what happens when you put two Alphas on the court.' You're going to get some paddle clanks," explained Waters. "It's better that we were both there. I got Anna in practice the other day, maybe not quite this bad, but these are battle scars."
The other semifinal will feature No. 2 Jorja Johnson and Rachel Rohrabacher against No. 3 Tyra Hurricane Black and Parris Todd.
