Waters, Johns dispatch Black, Patriquin in four games for mixed doubles crown
Anna Leigh Waters may have only competed in one gold medal match on Sunday in Las Vegas (a first for her since December of 2024), but she certainly made it count.
She and Ben Johns captured the mixed doubles title with an 11-9, 11-1, 1-11, 11-4 victory over No. 6 seeds Tyra Black/Hayden Patriquin in the day’s first contest.
Black/Patriquin dominated the third game after dropping the first two with some inspired play from Patriquin, but the top seeds proved to be too much in the end as they eventually cruised to their 52nd PPA title as a partnership.
Johns discussed how he and Waters have improved as their partnership has flourished over the past four years.
“I think AL is clearly the best player in the world on the women’s side, and it’s been really nice to be by her side. Having a bunch of wins together is testament to her just getting better and better as a player,” he mentioned. “It’s been like four years now, and she’s still getting better, which is truly something to watch. I try to get better as well, and I feel like every year we have gotten better as a partnership as we have to tried to stay ahead of the field, and I hope that continues.”
Both Waters and Johns will be back in action later on Sunday. Waters will play in the women’s doubles bronze medal match alongside Anna Bright, while Johns will play with Gabe Tardio in the men’s doubles final.
Additionally, No. 2 seeds Catherine Parenteau/Christian Alshon will take on No. 3 seeds Anna Bright/Federico Staksrud for mixed doubles bronze.
