Waters, Johns to face Parenteau, Alshon for mixed doubles gold
Anna Leigh Waters and Ben Johns are into the mixed doubles final after an 11-2, 5-11, 11-4 victory over No. 3 seeds Jorja and JW Johnson.
It looked like the top seeds would steamroll their opponents after taking Game 1 in just over twelve minutes, but the Johnson siblings responded strongly and found success in lengthy dink rallies in Game 2 to even the match and force a third game.
Waters and Johns proved to be too much and overpowered the No. 3 seeds in the decider, however, and continued their journey towards gold in Atlanta.
One of the storylines going into the match was Ben Johns’ mobility after suffering an ankle injury on Thursday.
It didn’t seem to affect him too much in his first match of the day.
“It’s felt better and better every day, and that’s mostly due to the doctor on the sidelines working on it for a few hours each day and just kind of locking it in my shoe,” Johns said. “Movement isn’t perfect, but I’m not in too much pain at this point.”
We’ll see if Johns’ lingering injury continues to be a factor in he and Collin Johns’ men’s doubles semifinal against Riley Newman and Christian Alshon later Saturday afternoon.
In the second mixed doubles semifinal, Catherine Parenteau and Christian Alshon eased past No. 14 seeds Lacy Schneemann and Tyson McGuffin by an 11-2, 11-4 score line.
It was a dominant performance from the No. 4 seeds, who have yet to drop a game in Atlanta.
Parenteau says that her and Alshon’s complimentary game styles make them a tough out.
“I feel like I can control my dinks while he’s just all over the court applying pressure,” she explained. “It’s just super easy to play with him.”
Through three tournaments together, Parenteau and Alshon have lost to only one team: Waters and Johns.
Unfortunately for them, that’s who they’ll face on Championship Sunday. When the two teams squared off for gold at the Orange County Cup in June, Waters and Johns won in straight games.
We’ll see if a different result is in store this time round.
