Waters overcomes challenge from Fahey to secure women’s singles gold, Triple Crown
Anna Leigh Waters closed out the week’s action at the Life Time Peachtree Corners with an 11-1, 7-11, 11-1 victory over No. 2 seed Kate Fahey.
It looked like the top seed would secure the win in straight games when she got up 7-5 in the second game, but Fahey used a six-point run to take a game off Waters for the first time in eight tries playing against her.
The impressive effort wouldn’t be enough in the end, though, as Waters caught a second wind in the third game and eventually cruised to the win to capture her 34th Triple Crown on the PPA Tour.
Waters says this week’s performance in the Georgia capital is a little more meaningful after she suffered two Championship Sunday defeats in her last tournament in North Carolina.
“I was definitely fired up after North Carolina,” she admitted. “I didn’t think that was my best performance, so I wanted to come out here and prove—not to everybody else, but to myself—that I still had it in me and that I could still fight.”
That’s what she did on Sunday, as she also earned her 150th career PPA title after winning women’s doubles gold with Anna Bright.
On the other side, Fahey has a lot to be proud of after becoming the only player to take a game off of Waters in any event this week.
“It stinks to lose, but I’m definitely trying to see the bigger picture,” she shared. “This is the first time I’ve taken a game, so I’m definitely proud of myself. There are several little wins that I’m taking from this match.”
In the bronze medal match, No. 4 seed Parris Todd defeated No. 7 seed Catherine Parenteau by a 9-11, 11-1, 11-4 score line.
