World record crowd witnesses blockbuster Championship Saturday in Vietnam

A Guinness World Record crowd of 7,906 fans brought the energy to Tien Son Sports Arena in Da Nang on Championship Saturday at the MB Vietnam Cup (PPA Tour Asia).

The official announcement was made during the closing ceremony by adjudicator, Austin Johnson.

The recognition was awarded to tournament organizer America & Asia Connect Co. Ltd, the Da Nang Pickleball Federation (DPF), and broadcaster FPT Play.

The previous record for the largest attendance at a pickleball event was 5,522.

"This achievement reflects the strong coordination between local authorities, organizers, sponsors, athletes and especially the fans," said DPF president Tran Phuoc Son, in a story published on Sunday in Tuoi Tre News.

Organizers indicated that it was the largest pickleball tournament in Asia to date, with nearly 600 players from Vietnam and abroad competing.

Siblings seal mixed doubles redemption

Alix and Jonathan Truong claimed gold in mixed doubles, delivering the championship they narrowly missed at the MB Vietnam Open.

After falling just short last month, they made sure to take the title in ferocious fashion with a 2-0 (11-1, 11-6) triumph over Zoey Wang and Tyson McGuffin.

"The people here in Vietnam, they bring us in as their own people, and we're so appreciative of that," said Alix. "It just feels so special that you have like a whole country riding on your back."

Phuc’s Vietnam fortress holds strong

Men’s singles was one-way traffic for Phuc Huynh as he continued his dominance on home soil. Two stops in for PPA Tour Asia in Vietnam and both went his way with a 2-0 (11-1, 11-4) victory over compatriot Hien Truong.

The crowd roared with every point as Phuc controlled the match with surgical precision.

The all-Vietnamese final delivered exactly what the home fans wanted, and Phuc made sure to put on a show.

"I never thought pickleball would get this extreme and get to this point. In Asia, it's crazy. Anything can happen," mentioned Huynh. "The stadium was packed, the crowd was electric, so it just gave me a lot of motivation to focus on the match. I was locked in, and got the job done."

McGuffin/Oncins: Lightning strikes twice

It was back-to-back doubles titles for Tyson McGuffin and Eric Oncins as they weathered the Armaan Bhatia and Zane Navratil storm 2-1 (5-11, 11-9, 11-0).

The experienced duo showed championship mettle when it mattered most.

Navratil and Bhatia looked like they had the match in their hands after dominating the opening game, but let it slip away as McGuffin and Oncins found their groove.

Two weeks ago Oncins had never been in a PPA final. Now he left his tour in Asia with two men’s doubles golds, both alongside McGuffin.

"Honestly, this crowd was one of the most impressive crowds I've seen in pickleball in my whole life. You guys kept me going, gave me so much energy," said Oncins. "Props to our opponents, Zane and Armaan. They pushed us to the limit and made us bring our "A" game. Thank you, guys! I love Vietnam. This is forever going to be in my heart."

"Keep me in Asia, baby! Keep me right here in Vietnam!" added McGuffin. "The last two weeks has been a dream come true for me. Thank you for coming out and bringing the energy. I know Eric and I felt it. You guys are awesome, and we can't wait to come back here next year."

Dennehy’s golden moment

Women’s singles went the way of Aussie Sahra Dennehy 2-0 (11-5, 11-7) as she capped off a remarkable week in Da Nang.

Becoming a stalwart of the podium at PPA Tour Asia, she finally got her first gold, denying Liz Truluck a maiden win in what was her own first ever PPA final.

Dennehy’s giant-killing run reached its perfect conclusion as she controlled the pace and never let Truluck find the comeback magic from Friday’s semifinal heroics.

"I'm honestly speechless. I've come up in a few finals and they haven't gone my way, so coming through this, it was like a battle of the nerves for me," said Dennehy. "Breaking through those, it's a big breakthrough for me."

Christian/Wang: Double trouble strikes again

Women’s doubles saw back-to-back titles for Kaitlyn Christian and Zoey Wang with a clinical 2-0 (11-8, 11-8) performance over Ting Chieh Wei and Alix Truong.

Once again getting their hands on the gold medal after also winning at the Panas Malaysia Cup, the partnership proved why they’re the team to beat.

Christian and Wang controlled both games from start to finish, never allowing their opponents to build any sustained pressure. Their chemistry and court coverage continue to set the standard in women’s doubles across PPA Tour Asia.

"This has been an incredible two weeks. It was an incredible experience playing in front of you," said Christian. "I've never played in front of such a big crowd in tennis or in pickleball, and it's just so exciting to see the growth explode like this. I will definitely be coming back to Asia."
