Hand Ben Johns the aux, he’s playing our favorite girly pop music
We all can agree that Ben Johns is the greatest pickleball player of all-time.
The results speak for themselves, and he has definitely earned his rightful place on Pickleball Mt. Rushmore.
Medals and championships aside, Johns also has superb taste in music.
His go-to answer when asked about his favorite genre is always classic rock, but a quick investigation of his Spotify playlist reveals that he aslo loves a girly pop jam from time to time, too.
Pop music has enjoyed a remarkable run this year with Sabrina Carpenter, Chappell Roan, Taylor Swift, and Olivia Rodrigo dominating the charts.
And as much as Johns claims he’s a classic rock guy, I beg to differ.
At the Lapiplasty Pickleball World Championships, Pickleballtv host Matt Manassee noticed Johns' reaction to the song "Pink Pony Club" by Chappell Roan when the DJ played it after a win.
Usually the embodiment of calm, cool, and collected on the court, he cracked a smile when he heard it. For Johns, that’s the equivalent of showcasing a dance move and singing along to the track.
“I think the DJ got a heads up from my little sister when we were at Virginia Beach because I do like that song,” he said.
Leave it to the Johns siblings to share some intel on Ben to get him to emote a bit.
“When I would drive to school in my last semester at the University of Maryland, my sisters and I would listen to that song together, so that’s why I love it,” he confirmed.
It's safe to say Johns knows quite a bit about pop girl music.
And his three Spotify playlists that are readily available to the public are telling.
Check out the titles...
“T-Swift Favorites”
“Fleetwood Mac Favs”
“Gameday – Ben J & AL Waters”
Johns loves Swift megahits like “Cruel Summer” and “Anti-Hero,” of course, but his song choices from 1989, Speak Now, Red, and Fearless are all “Taylor's Version,” so he's clearly a dedicated Swiftie. We love that.
He famously said that he listened to “Enchanted” to get himself hyped up before a match at the Fanatics Sportsbook North Carolina Cup.
With respect to Swift’s latest album, The Tortured Poets Department, Johns’ favorites are “Fortnight” (feat. Post Malone), “My Boy Only Breaks His Favorite Toys,” and “But Daddy I Love Him.”
Now that is the hype song I want to see him jamming out to, with lyrics like:
"I'm having his baby
No, I'm not, but you should see your faces."
I bet his Spotify Wrapped had a lot of girl pop music. Can we say that Ben is just one of the girls? Maybe we’ll see him hit the H-O-T-T-O-G-O in 2025? Either way, he’s getting the aux.
